Class Descriptions:

Medical Terminology: This 16-week class is strongly recommended for anyone who wants to work in the medical field.  It provides valuable knowledge of terms associated with anatomy, body functions, diagnosis, procedures, spelling, and pronunciation.  This course serves as a basis for most other medical classes.

Medical Keyboarding: This self-paced class improves accuracy and speed using a computerized typing program and material based on medical documentation and medical terminology.  Computer literacy and accuracy are important for most positions in the medical field.

Medical Insurance Billing and Coding 1: The course covers the life cycle of an insurance claim, introduction to MediSoft for claims completion, ICD-9-CM coding guidelines and practice.  HIPPA regulations and information on fraud and abuse in billing are also included.  This course is recommended for people working or wanting to work in a medical office that needs cross-trained employees, those seeking jobs in an office or hospital insurance coding and billing, or in a commercial health insurance office.

Phlebotomy & Vital Signs: This class offers instruction and hands-on experience for phlebotomy (drawing blood samples, specimen handling) and taking vital signs (blood pressure, pulse).  This class is important for those who want to work in a clinical setting.

Pharmacology: This class is an overview of various drug classification, routes of administration, and actions on the body. It also reviews the manufacturing and legal aspect of the pharmaceutical industry.  This course is helpful for insurance specialists, medical office personnel, and transcriptionists.

Personal Care Provided (PCP): Component classes will cover all the skills and training involved in caring for patients who need help with a variety of daily needs including bathing, eating, dressing, housekeeping, and companionship.  The course will include hands-on training with an experienced PCP or CNA.  Background checks may be required for this class.

Medisoft: Medisoft gives students hands-on experience with setting up a practice, registering providers and patients, entering client transactions, creating schedules/reports, and maintaining the practice's financial documents using the MediSoft program.  This course is valuable for practices that use the software but have not had the training, office that want to convert to MediSoft, and students wanting to increase their marketability.

Medical Office Assistant:  This class provides the critical thinking skills associated with a variety of functions in the medical setting, particularly the doctor's office.  The student is introduced to medical office software, ethics, accounting functions, and some of the documents used in office settings.  Enrollment in Billing and Coding 1 at the same time works well.

Medical Insurance:  Students review anatomy and medical terminology, reimbursement, ICD-9-CM, CPT, and HCPCS. Entry-level insurance specialists can assess their current level of knowledge to gain what skills they need to advance their careers.
