New York City – More than 80 percent of the children in America's low-income families have at least one parent who works, and after a decade of decline, the proportion of children living in low-income families is rising again, a trend that began in 2000, despite high levels of employment.
The Education & Life Training Center’s Pack2School community assistance project addresses both the financial and educational needs of low-income families. The project's objective is to procure the required school supplies, along with supplemental books, dental, hygiene and clothing, and distribute them to children in grades K-9 from low-income families in Larimer County. Our procedure is unique in that it allows the children to pick out or "shop" for their preferred styles and colors, thereby instilling a sense of ownership and also alleviating the embarrassment of having to ask a teacher or school administrator for supplies. Additionally, our school supply packages are more comprehensive than those typically provided by schools or other programs
Families pay just $ 5.00 per backpack for the supplies, which is purely symbolic as it does not cover the cost of the items, but it also enhance the families’ self-esteem by instilling a sense contribution.
This program supports family literacy in the community by giving kids the tools they need for school, and it boosts their dignity and self-esteem when they arrive on the first day equipped with new supplies just like the other kids. Literate, self-confident children can become literate, self-confident adults, and that ties into ELTC’s mission.
